There are several signs that can help you spot these dangerous leaks.
1. Smelling Rotten Eggs or Sulfur
This pungent odor comes from the gas itself, and is placed into gas lines to make leak detection easier. Gas is otherwise colorless and odorless, so while unpleasant, the rotten egg smell is an extremely important warning sign of potential gas leaks.
2. Hissing or Whistling Sounds
Gas will quickly follow lower pressure, giving gas leaks a distinctive, hissing sound. If you notice this sound near a gas line or appliance, leave the building immediately and call 911.
3. Feeling Lightheaded or Nauseous
A natural gas leak indoors can make you feel lightheaded or sick to your stomach. Not only should you contact first responders, but it may be necessary to seek medical attention as well. Don’t treat any personal symptoms lightly, and always favor caution!
4. Dead Grass or Plants
If you have a gas leak outdoors, you might notice dying or discolored vegetation. Check around the perimeter of the building for discolored plants or grass.
